March Milestone

Speakeasy

For march i had the privilege to work with southpaw dance company in the performance "speakeasy" which was based in the 1920's. The scenes i was in was when the singer with her backing people met the main antagonist for the first time which was slow and more waltz pace where as the second routine was more fast paced and more chaotic.

The rehearsal process went as followed:

  • we had a talk about what the show was based on then we started to learn the style "swing" which was common in the 20's to dance with or without partners.
  • we got taught the routine by Robbie and Alicia and recorded it both the solo part and the partner work and then we watched them back and workshopped ideas to try and improve the performance to make it more ready for the 8th April.
  • The week after we did a dress rehearsal and did the routine to make sure that the costumes were ok for the performance, then we went to the fire station the day before the performance to record material for the trailer and take photos and to rehearse in the space because we wouldn't of had time to do it before the performance.
What went well during this process:
  • I was confident with working with my partner to show them the routine when they had forgotten it.
  • The routine had some hard parts and some easy so it was for everyone to enjoy and to pick it up easily.
  • We were allowed to rehearse in the space given with lighting and cues to tell us when to be backstage and when to exit and enter.
What could have been improved:
  • I could of express my facial expression more during rehearsals in the studios.
  • When i was at the venue i could of had more practice with my partner because we didn't know some of the parts.
  • I should of used the rehearsal time more accurate because i was focused more on how precise the movement should of been instead of focusing on learning it first then worry about how it looks when i was more confident.

InterSkills

On the 23rd March i was asked if i would represent Sunderland College in the InterSkills dance competition. We got given a task to create a routine based on the given brief which was "affairs in social media", as a response to this me and my peers chose to feminism and how women are seen as wrong to have more of a masculine jobs so in the dance i had done all the things in history were women have shown men wrong.

The rehearsal process went as followed:
  • I got given the brief at 9, then i started the routine and the judges started walking around and asking questions.
  • As the day went on i done more of the routine and recorded it so me and my peers could go back and see what went wrong and what went well.
  • And then after performing it in front of the other competitors i came first.

My Target for march:

My target was to use more facial expression and learning my lines quicker in rehearsal time instead of using them only for the day of a performance, i had to work on trying to improve them more for the different emotions for dancing and acting in scenes. For example this monologue is from An Inspector Calls where one of the main characters is called Shelia Birling and in the scene she feels guilty for being the downfall for Eva Smith's "death".
